CYP2B6 유전자는 사이토크롬 P450(cytochrome P450) 효소(enzyme) 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)의 일원을 암호화한다. 사이토크롬 P450 단백질은 약물 대사와 콜레스테롤, 스테로이드 및 기타 지질의 합성에 관여하는 많은 반응을 촉매하는 모노옥시게나아제(monooxygenase)이다. 이 단백질은 소포체(endoplasmic reticulum)에 국소화되며, 페노바비탈(phenobarbital)에 의해 발현이 유도되고, 사이클포스파마이드(cyclophosphamide)와 이포스파마이드(ifosphamide) 같은 항암(anti-cancer) 약물을 대사한다.
