CXCL2는 항균 유전자로, 면역조절 및 염증(inflammation) 과정에 관여하는 분비 단백질을 암호화하는 케모카인(chemokine) 상위가족의 일원이다. 성숙한 펩타이드(peptide)의 N-말단 시스테인 잔기 배열에 따라 이 상위가족은 4개의 서브패밀리(subfamily)으로 나뉜다. CXC 서브패밀리(subfamily)에 속하는 이 케모카인은 염증(inflammation) 부위에서 발현되며 조혈 전구세포 증식을 억제할 수 있다.
