CXCL16는 케모카인(chemokine) 활성을 가지며, 세포 성장의 양성 조절, 종양 괴사 인자(tumor necrosis factor)에 대한 반응, II형 인터페론(type II interferon)에 대한 반응 등 여러 과정에 관여한다. 세포외 공간(extracellular space)에 위치하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 또한 COVID-19와 전신성 경피증(systemic scleroderma)의 바이오마커로 보고된다.
