이 유전자는 면역 조절 및 염증 과정에 관여하는 분비 단백질을 암호화하는 사이토카인(cytokine) 유전자 계열에 속한다. 이 유전자가 지정하는 단백질은 CXC (Cys-X-Cys) 사이토카인 소계열과 구조적으로 관련이 있다. 이 소계열의 구성원은 단일 아미노산으로 분리된 두 개의 시스테인으로 특징지어진다. 이 사이토카인은 단핵구(monocyte)에 대한 화학주성 활성을 나타내지만, 림프구, 수지상 세포, 호중구 또는 대식세포에 대해서는 그렇지 않다. 이 사이토카인은 염증보다는 단핵구 유래 대식세포의 항상성 유지에 관여하는 것으로 시사되었다.
