이 단백질은 백혈구의 부착과 이동에 관여하는 막 단백질이자 케모카인(chemokine)입니다. 이 유전자는 프락탈카인(fractalkine)에 대한 수용체(receptor)를 지정합니다. 또한, 이 유전자가 지정하는 단백질은 HIV-1의 공동 수용체이며, 이 유전자의 일부 변이는 HIV-1 감염에 대한 감수성을 높이고 AIDS로의 빠른 진행을 유발합니다. 이 유전자에는 두 가지 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 네 개의 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)가 존재합니다.
