CTSZ가 암호화하는 단백질은 리소좀 시스테인 단백질분해효소(lysosomal cysteine proteinase)로, 펩티다아제 C1 계열(peptidase C1 family)에 속하며 카복시-모노펩티다아제(carboxy-monopeptidase)와 카복시-디펩티다아제(carboxy-dipeptidase) 활성을 모두 나타낸다. 카텝신 X(cathepsin X) 및 카텝신 P(cathepsin P)로도 알려져 있으며, 암 세포주와 원발 종양(primary tumors)에서 광범위하게 발현된다. 계열 내 다른 구성원과 마찬가지로 종양발생(tumorigenesis)에 관여할 가능성이 있다.
