이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 펩티다아제 S1 단백질 계열(peptidase S1 protein family, 키모트립신형 세린 프로테아제 계열)에 속하며, 호중성 다형핵 백혈구(neutrophilic polymorphonuclear leukocyte)의 아주로필 과립(azurophil granule)에 존재한다. 이 프로테아제는 키모트립신 C(chymotrypsin C)와 유사한 기질 특이성을 가지며, 탐식된 병원체의 사멸 및 소화, 염증 부위에서의 결합 조직 리모델링(connective tissue remodeling)에 관여하는 것으로 여겨진다. 또한 이 단백질은 황색포도상구균(S. aureus) 및 임질균(N. gonorrhoeae)에 대한 살균 활성(bactericidal activity)을 지닌 항미생물 단백질이며, 이 유전자에는 대체 폴리아데닐화 신호(alternative polyadenylation signal)를 이용하는 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)가 존재한다.
