CTGF가 암호화하는 단백질은 혈관 내피세포(vascular endothelial cell)가 분비하는 유사분열 촉진 인자(mitogen)이다. 연골세포(chondrocyte)의 증식과 분화, 그리고 다양한 세포 유형에서의 세포 접착에 관여하며, 혈소판유래성장인자(platelet-derived growth factor)와 연관성을 지닌다. CTGF의 특정 다형성(polymorphism)은 전신경화증(systemic sclerosis)의 발생률 증가와 연관된 것으로 보고되었다.
