CSN2는 베타 카제인(beta casein) 계열 유전자로, 카파(kappa) 카제인과 함께 사람 모유로 분비되는 두 종류의 카제인(casein) 단백질 중 하나를 암호화한다. 베타 카제인은 모유의 주된 단백질이자 수유 영아의 필수 아미노산 주요 공급원이며, 카파 카제인과 함께 구형 미셀(micelle)을 형성해 칼슘·인 같은 식이 무기질을 결합한다. 단백질 C-말단(C-terminal)의 14개 아미노산은 특히 조산아 모유에서 황색포도상구균(S. aureus)과 여시니아 엔테로콜리티카(Y. enterocolitica)에 대한 항균 활성을 보이며, 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)으로 여러 전사체 변이(transcript variant)가 생성된다.
