유전자 개요

CSF2가 암호화하는 단백질은 과립구(granulocyte)와 대식세포(macrophage)의 생성, 분화 및 기능을 조절하는 사이토카인(cytokine)으로, 활성형은 세포외에서 동종이량체(homodimer)로 존재한다. 해당 유전자는 5q- 증후군(syndrome) 및 급성 골수성 백혈병(acute myelogenous leukemia)의 간질 결실(interstitial deletion)과 연관된 것으로 알려진 염색체 5q31 영역의 유전자 군집에 위치하며, 조직 염증을 촉진하는 역할을 한다. 급성 호흡곤란 증후군이 발생한 SARS-CoV-2 감염 환자에서 이 단백질을 포함한 사이토카인 수치 상승이 확인되었고, 이 유전자나 그 수용체가 결핍된 생쥐는 폐포 단백증(pulmonary alveolar proteinosis)을 나타낸다.
