이 유전자는 장쇄 지방산의 미토콘드리아 산화에 관여하는 효소(enzyme)인 카르니틴 팔미토일트랜스퍼라제 I (CPT I)의 생성을 지정한다. CPT I은 미토콘드리아 내막을 통한 카르니틴 의존적 수송의 핵심 효소이며, 이 효소의 결핍은 지방산 베타 산화율 감소를 초래한다. 또한, 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 지정하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체가 이 유전자에서 발견되었다.
