CP가 암호화하는 단백질은 혈장 내 구리의 대부분과 결합하는 금속단백질(metalloprotein)로, Fe(II)트랜스페린을 Fe(III)트랜스페린으로 전환하는 과산화(peroxidation) 반응에 관여한다. CP의 돌연변이는 철 축적과 조직 손상을 일으키는 무세룰로플라스민혈증(aceruloplasminemia)을 유발하며, 당뇨병 및 신경학적 이상과 연관된다. 단백질을 암호화하는 전사체 변이체(transcript variant) 1개와 암호화하지 않는 변이체 1개가 확인되었다.
