COL5A2는 함량이 낮은 섬유성 콜라겐(fibrillar collagen)의 알파 사슬(alpha chain) 하나를 암호화한다. 섬유성 콜라겐 분자는 하나 이상의 알파 사슬 유형으로 구성되는 삼량체이며, V형 콜라겐(type V collagen)은 I형 콜라겐(type I collagen)이 존재하는 조직에서 발견되어 두 유형으로 이루어진 이형 섬유(heterotypic fibers)의 조립을 조절하는 것으로 보인다. 이 유전자 산물은 XI형 콜라겐(type XI collagen)과 밀접하게 관련되며, COL5A2의 돌연변이는 엘러스-단로스 증후군(Ehlers-Danlos syndrome) I형 및 II형과 연관된다.
