이 유전자는 저함량 섬유상 콜라젠(fibrillar collagens) 중 하나의 알파 사슬을 암호화한다. 섬유상 콜라젠 분자는 하나 이상의 알파 사슬 유형으로 구성될 수 있는 삼량체이다. 5형 콜라젠은 1형 콜라젠을 포함하는 조직에서 발견되며, 1형 및 5형 콜라젠으로 구성된 이형 섬유(heterotypic fibers)의 조립을 조절하는 것으로 보인다. 이 유전자 산물은 11형 콜라젠과 밀접한 관련이 있으며, 5형 및 11형 콜라젠 사슬이 조직 특이적 사슬 조합을 가진 단일 콜라젠 유형을 구성할 가능성이 있다. 돌연변이는 에흘러스-단로스 증후군(Ehlers-Danlos syndrome) 1형 및 2형과 관련이 있다.
