COL3A1은 III형 콜라겐(type III collagen)의 프로-알파1 사슬(pro-alpha1 chains)을 암호화하는 유전자로, III형 콜라겐은 피부, 폐, 자궁, 장, 혈관계와 같은 신장성 결합조직(extensible connective tissue)에 분포하는 섬유성 콜라겐(fibrillar collagen)이며 흔히 I형 콜라겐(type I collagen)과 함께 발견된다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 엘러스-단로스 증후군 IV형(Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV) 및 대동맥·동맥 동맥류(aortic and arterial aneurysm)와 연관되어 있다.
