이 유전자는 제18형 콜라겐(type XVIII collagen)의 알파 사슬을 암호화한다. 이 콜라겐은 여러 삼중 나선 도메인(콜라겐 도메인)과 이를 가로지르는 비콜라겐 도메인을 포함하는 세포외 기질 단백질인 멀티플렉신(multiplexin) 중 하나이다. 단백질의 긴 아이소폼(isoform)은 프리즐드 수용체(frizzled receptor)의 세포외 부분과 상동성을 갖는 N-말단 도메인을 지닌다. C-말단 도메인 내 여러 내인성 절단 부위에서의 단백질 분해는 강력한 항혈관생성 단백질이자 혈관신생 및 종양(tumor) 성장을 억제할 수 있는 엔도스타틴(endostatin)의 생산을 초래한다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 크노블록 증후군(Knobloch syndrome)과 관련이 있다. 이 증후군의 주요 특징은 망막 이상을 포함하므로, 제18형 콜라겐은 망막 구조와 신경관 폐쇄에 중요한 역할을 할 수 있다. 대체 스플라이싱은 여러 전사체 변이체를 생성한다.
