CNTF가 암호화하는 단백질은 작용이 신경계에 국한된 폴리펩티드 호르몬(polypeptide hormone)으로, 특정 신경세포 집단에서 신경전달물질 합성과 신경돌기 성장(neurite outgrowth)을 촉진한다. 이 단백질은 신경세포와 희소돌기아교세포(oligodendrocyte)에 대한 강력한 생존 인자이며, 염증성 공격 과정에서 조직 손상을 줄이는 데 관여할 가능성이 있다. 한편 비정상적 스플라이싱을 유발하는 돌연변이는 섬모 신경영양인자(ciliary neurotrophic factor) 결핍으로 이어지지만, 이 표현형은 신경계 질환과 인과적으로 연결되지는 않는다.
