이 유전자는 두 개의 칸나비노이드 수용체(cannabinoid receptor) 중 하나를 지정한다. 칸나비노이드는 주로 델타-9-테트라하이드로칸나비놀과 합성 유사체이며, 대마초의 향정신성 성분이다. 칸나비노이드 수용체는 구아닌 뉴클레오타이드 결합 단백질(G-protein) 결합 수용체 계열에 속하며, 아데닐레이트 사이클레이즈(adenylate cyclase) 활성을 용량 의존적, 입체 선택적, 그리고 백일해 독소 민감 방식으로 억제한다. 이 두 수용체는 대마초 사용자에게 경험되는 칸나비노이드 유발 중추신경계(CNS) 효과(기분 및 인지 변화 포함)에 관여하는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 두 개의 다른 단백질 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 전사 변이체(transcript variant)가 이 유전자에 대해 기술되었다.
