이 유전자는 케라틴 계열 단백질을 암호화한다. 케라틴은 상피 세포의 구조적 완전성을 담당하는 중간섬유(intermediate filament) 단백질로, 세포케라틴과 모발 케라틴으로 나뉜다. 제1형 세포케라틴은 산성 단백질로 구성되며, 이들은 이종 이중합체 케라틴 사슬 쌍으로 배열된다. 이 가장 작은 산성 세포케라틴은 관련된 계열 구성원과 달리 상피 세포에서 염기성 세포케라틴과 쌍을 이루지 않는다. 이 단백질은 발달하는 표피를 감싸는 일시적인 표층인 원시표피(periderm)에 특이적으로 발현된다. 제1형 세포케라틴은 염색체 17q12-q21 영역에 군집해 있다.
