이 유전자가 지정하는 단백질은 SH2 도메인과 SOCS 박스 도메인을 포함합니다. 이 단백질은 사이토카인 유도성 STAT 저해제(CIS), 또는 사이토카인 신호 억제자(SOCS)로도 알려진 단백질 계열에 속합니다. CIS 계열 구성원은 사이토카인 신호 전달의 사이토카인 유도성 음성 조절인자로 알려져 있습니다. 이 유전자의 발현은 조혈모세포에서 IL2, IL3, GM-CSF 및 EPO에 의해 유도될 수 있습니다. 이 단백질의 프로테아좀 매개 분해는 이리트로포이에틴 수용체(erythropoietin receptor)의 불활성화에 관여하는 것으로 밝혀졌습니다. 이 유전자에 대해 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 지정하는 여러 전사 변이체가 발견되었습니다.
