이 유전자는 RAB 제라닐제라닐 전달효소(RAB geranylgeranyl transferase) 홀로효소(holoenzyme)의 A 구성요소를 암호화한다. 이합체(dimeric) 홀로효소에서 이 소단위체는 프레닐화되지 않은 Rab GTPase와 결합한 후, 이를 촉매 서브유닛인 Rab GGTase에 제시하여 제라닐제라닐 전달 반응을 수행하게 한다. Rab GTPase는 올바른 세포 내 막에 국재화하기 위해 C-말단의 하나 또는 두 개의 시스테인(cysteine) 잔기에 제라닐제라닐화(geranylgeranylation)가 필요하다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 맥락막결손증(choroideremia), 즉 융단맥락막이영양증(tapetochoroidal dystrophy, TCD)으로도 알려진 질환의 원인이며, 이 X-연관 질환은 맥락막(choroid), 망막색소상피(retinal pigment epithelium) 및 망막의 진행성 이영양증(dystrophy)을 특징으로 한다.
