CH25H는 콜레스테롤 및 지질 대사에 관여하는 무인자 유전자이다. 이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 막(membrane) 단백질이며, 촉매 활성에 필수적인 히스티딘 잔기 군집을 포함한다. 대부분의 다른 스테롤 수산화효소(sterol hydroxylase)와 달리, 이 효소는 소수성 기질의 수산화(hydroxylation)를 촉매하기 위해 두 개의 철(diiron) 보조인자를 사용하는 소수의 효소군에 속한다.
