CFB는 보체 활성화의 대체경로(alternative pathway)를 구성하는 보체인자 B(complement factor B)를 암호화하며, 단일 사슬 폴리펩타이드 형태로 혈중을 순환하다 대체경로가 활성화되면 보체인자 D에 의해 비촉매성 사슬 Ba와 촉매성 소단위 Bb로 절단됩니다. 세린 단백질분해효소(serine protease)인 Bb는 C3b와 결합해 대체경로 C3 전환효소(C3 convertase)를 형성하고, 예비활성화된 B 림프구의 증식을 촉진하는 반면 Ba는 그 증식을 억제합니다. 이 유전자는 6번 염색체의 주조직적합성복합체(MHC) 클래스 III 영역에 위치하며, 특정 다형성은 노인성 황반변성(age-related macular degeneration)의 위험 감소와 연관됩니다.
