이 유전자는 카복실에스터레이스(carboxylesterase) 대가족의 구성원을 암호화합니다. 이 가족 구성원들은 코카인 및 헤로인과 같은 다양한 외인성 물질 및 에스터, 티오에스터, 또는 아마이드 결합을 가진 내인성 기질의 가수분해 또는 에스터 교환 반응에 관여합니다. 이들은 지방 아실 및 콜레스테롤 에스터 대사에 참여하며 혈액-뇌 장벽 시스템에서 역할을 할 수 있습니다. 이 효소는 주요 간 효소로서 간 약물 청소에 관여합니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 카복실에스터레이스 1 결핍증을 유발합니다. 이 유전자에 대해 세 가지 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 세 가지 전사 변이체(transcript variant)가 발견되었습니다.
