CENPF는 중심절-동원체 복합체(centromere-kinetochore complex)와 결합하는 단백질을 암호화하며, 간기(interphase)의 G2기 동안에는 핵 기질(nuclear matrix)을 구성하는 성분으로 존재한다. 후기 G2에 들어서면 동원체(kinetochore)와 결합하여 초기 후기(early anaphase)까지 그 결합을 유지하며, 유사분열(mitosis) 과정에서 염색체 분리(chromosome segregation)에 관여하는 것으로 여겨진다. 이 단백질에 대한 자가항체(autoantibody)는 암 또는 이식편대숙주병(graft-versus-host disease) 환자에서 검출된 바 있다.
