이 단백질은 세포 주기(cell cycle)의 G2기 동안 축적되는 키네신 유사 운동 단백질(kinesin-like motor protein)입니다. 다른 중심체(centrosome) 관련 단백질과 달리, 이 단백질은 간기(interphase)에는 존재하지 않다가 전기의 시작 부위(prometaphase) 동안 염색체의 동원체 영역(centromere region)에 처음 나타납니다. 이 단백질은 전기의 시작 부위(prometaphase) 동안 염색체 정렬에 필요한 동원체(kinetochore)에서의 안정적인 방추 미세소관(spindle microtubule) 포획에 필수적입니다. 또한, 염색체 위치를 미세소관(microtubule)의 탈중합 활성(depolymerizing activity)과 연결합니다. 대립유전자 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)으로 인해 다양한 단백질 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이체가 생성됩니다.
