CELSR1(CESR1)에 의해 암호화되는 단백질은 카드헤린(cadherin) 상위가족 중 플라밍고(flamingo) 소과에 속한다. 플라밍고 카드헤린은 세포막(plasma membrane)에 위치하며, 세포외 도메인(ectodomain)에 9개의 카드헤린(cadherin) 도메인, 7개의 표피 성장 인자(epidermal growth factor, EGF) 유사 반복, 2개의 라미닌(laminin) A G형 반복과 7개의 막관통 도메인(transmembrane domain)을 가진다. 이 단백질은 세포 간 접촉 매개 의사소통에 참여하는 수용체(receptor)로 추정되며, 발달 단계별 조절되는 신경 특이적 유전자로 초기 배아발생에서 특정 역할을 수행한다.
