이 유전자가 지정하는 단백질은 이중 특이성 인산 가수 분해 효소(dual specificity protein phosphatase) 족에 속하며, 사이클린 의존성 키나아제(cyclin-dependent kinase) 저해제로 확인되었다. 이 단백질은 CDK2 키나아제(CDK2 kinase)와 상호작용하고 탈인산화하여 CDK2 키나아제의 활성화를 억제한다. 또한 이 유전자는 여러 암에서 결손·돌연변이·과발현이 보고되었고, 선택적 접합을 통해 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 다양한 전사체 변이체가 존재한다.
