이 유전자는 다양한 종양에서 자주 변이되거나 결실되는 부위에 위치하며, 종양 억제 유전자인 CDKN2A에 인접해 있습니다. 사이클린 의존성 키나아제 저해제(cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor)를 암호화하며, 이 단백질은 CDK4 또는 CDK6와 복합체를 형성하여 CDK 키나아제의 활성화를 막습니다. 따라서 암호화된 단백질은 세포 주기 G1기 진행을 조절하는 세포 성장 조절자로서 기능합니다. TGF 베타에 의해 이 유전자의 발현이 극적으로 유도되는 것이 발견되었으며, 이는 TGF 베타 유도 성장 억제에서의 역할을 시사합니다. 서로 다른 단백질을 암호화하는 두 개의 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체가 보고되었습니다.
