CDK2는 세포 주기(cell cycle) 조절에 관여하는 세린/트레오닌 단백질 키나아제(serine/threonine protein kinase) 계열 구성원을 암호화한다. 암호화된 단백질은 사이클린 의존성 단백질 키나아제 복합체(cyclin-dependent protein kinase complex)의 촉매 소단위(catalytic subunit)로서 세포 주기 진행을 조절하며, 특히 G1기에서 S기로의 전환 시점에서 핵심적인 역할을 한다. 사이클린 A 또는 E, CDK 저해제(inhibitor)인 p21Cip1(CDKN1A) 및 p27Kip1(CDKN1B) 등 복합체의 다른 소단위와 결합해 이들에 의해 조절되며, 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 전사체 변이가 만들어진다.
