이 유전자는 칼슘 의존적 세포-세포 부착을 매개하는 막 단백질인 제2형 고전적 카드헤린(cadherin) 계통군에 속한다. 성숙한 카드헤린 단백질은 큰 N-말단 세포외 도메인, 단일 막 통과 도메인, 작고 잘 보존된 C-말단 세포질 도메인으로 구성된다. 제2형(비정형) 카드헤린은 제1형 카드헤린에 특이적인 HAV 세포 부착 인식 서열이 없다는 점에 기반하여 정의된다. 골아세포 계열 세포에서의 이 특정 카드헤린 발현과 분화 중 상향 조절은 뼈 발달 및 유지에 대한 특정 기능을 시사한다.
