CD90은 세포 표면 당단백질(glycoprotein)로, 면역글로불린(immunoglobulin) 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)에 속하는 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 다양한 세포, 특히 면역계와 신경계 세포에서 세포 부착과 세포 간 신호 전달에 관여하며, 조혈모세포(hematopoietic stem cell) 표지자로 널리 활용된다. 또한 비인두 암종(nasopharyngeal carcinoma)에서 종양 억제인자로 기능할 가능성이 있으며, 선택적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 전사체 변이가 생성된다.
