CD8 항원(antigen)은 대부분의 세포독성 T 림프구(cytotoxic T lymphocyte)에서 발견되는 세포 표면 당단백질(glycoprotein)로, 면역계 내에서 효율적인 세포-세포 상호작용을 매개한다. T 세포 수용체(T-cell receptor)와 함께 공동수용체(coreceptor)로 작용하여 항원제시세포가 제1형 주조직적합성복합체(class I MHC) 분자와 함께 제시하는 항원을 인식하며, 두 개의 알파 사슬로 이루어진 동종이량체(homodimer) 또는 알파 사슬과 베타 사슬로 이루어진 이종이량체(heterodimer) 형태로 기능한다. CD8 알파 사슬을 암호화하는 이 유전자의 주요 단백질 아이소폼(isoform)은 막관통 도메인(transmembrane domain)의 유무에 따라 막 고정형 또는 분비형 단백질로 구분된다.
