CD83이 암호화하는 단백질은 단일 통과(single-pass) I형 막단백질이며, 수용체 면역글로불린 슈퍼패밀리(immunoglobulin superfamily)에 속한다. 이 단백질은 항원(antigen) 제시 조절에 관여할 수 있으며, 가용성(soluble) 형태는 수지상세포(dendritic cell)에 결합해 그 성숙을 억제할 수 있다. 해당 유전자에서는 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 세 가지 전사체 변이가 확인되었다.
