CD81은 테트라스파닌(tetraspanin) 계열로도 불리는 막관통 4 슈퍼패밀리(transmembrane 4 superfamily)의 구성원으로, 네 개의 소수성 도메인을 갖는 세포 표면 당단백질(glycoprotein)이며 인테그린(integrins)과 복합체를 형성하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 이 단백질은 세포 발달, 활성화, 성장 및 운동성 조절에 관여하는 신호 전달을 매개하고 근육세포 융합을 촉진하며 근관(myotube) 유지에 기여하는 것으로 보인다. 해당 유전자는 종양 억제 유전자 영역에 위치하여 악성종양의 후보 유전자로 여겨지며, 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)를 암호화하는 두 개의 전사 변이체(transcript variant)가 확인되었다.
