이 유전자는 사이토카인(cytokine)에 의해 자극된 혈관내피(endothelium) 세포에서 발견되는 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 혈관 표면에 세포가 부착되도록 매개하여 염증 부위에 혈액 백혈구(leukocyte)가 축적되는 데 관여하는 것으로 생각된다. 렉틴(lectin) 유사 도메인과 EGF 유사 도메인에 이어 6개의 보존된 시스테인 잔기를 포함하는 짧은 컨센서스 반복(short consensus repeat, SCR) 도메인이 있는 구조적 특징을 나타낸다. 이 단백질들은 세포 부착 분자(cell adhesion molecule)인 셀렉틴(selectin) 계열의 일부이다. 부착 분자는 백혈구와 혈관내피 간의 상호작용에 참여하며 죽상동맥경화증(atherosclerosis) 병인론에 관여하는 것으로 보인다.
