CD55는 보체 연쇄반응(complement cascade)의 조절에 관여하는 당단백질(glycoprotein)을 암호화한다. 이 단백질이 보체 단백질에 결합하면 보체의 붕괴(decay)가 촉진되어 연쇄반응이 차단되고 숙주 세포의 손상이 방지되며, 단백질 표면의 항원은 Cromer 혈액형 시스템(CROM)을 구성한다. 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)으로 여러 전사체 변이가 생성되는데, 주된 변이는 막 결합형 단백질을, 일부 변이는 가용성 단백질을 암호화한다.
