CD4(CD4) 유전자는 T 림프구(T lymphocyte)의 막당단백질(membrane glycoprotein)인 CD4를 암호화한다. CD4 항원(antigen)은 T 세포 수용체(T-cell receptor)와 함께 보조수용체(coreceptor)로 작용하여, 제2형 주요조직적합복합체(class II MHC) 분자의 맥락에서 항원제시세포(antigen presenting cell)가 제시하는 항원을 인식한다. 이 단백질은 T 세포 활성화의 초기 단계를 개시하거나 증강하며, 중추신경계의 감염성 및 면역매개 질환에서 간접적 신경세포 손상의 중요한 매개자로 기능할 수 있다.
