CD3E가 암호화하는 단백질은 CD3-엡실론(epsilon) 폴리펩타이드(polypeptide)로, CD3-감마·델타·제타 및 T세포 수용체(T-cell receptor) 알파/베타와 감마/델타 이종이량체(heterodimer)와 함께 T세포 수용체-CD3 복합체를 형성한다. 이 복합체는 항원(antigen) 인식을 여러 세포내 신호전달 경로와 연결하는 데 중요한 역할을 하며, 엡실론 폴리펩타이드는 T세포 발달에 필수적이다. 이 유전자의 결함은 면역결핍을 유발하고, 여성에서 제1형 당뇨병 감수성과도 연관되어 있다.
