CD36(CD36)이 암호화하는 단백질은 혈소판(platelet) 표면의 네 번째 주요 당단백질(glycoprotein)로, 혈소판과 여러 세포주에서 트롬보스폰딘(thrombospondin)의 수용체(receptor)로 작용하며, 콜라겐(collagen), 트롬보스폰딘, 음이온성 인지질(anionic phospholipids), 산화 LDL(oxidized LDL)에 결합한다. 트롬보스폰딘이 다양한 부착 과정에 관여하는 폭넓게 분포된 단백질인 만큼, 이 단백질은 세포 부착 분자로서 중요한 기능을 가질 수 있다. 또한 열대열원충(Plasmodium falciparum)에 감염된 적혈구의 세포부착을 직접 매개하고 장쇄 지방산에 결합하여 지방산 수송 또는 그 조절에 관여할 수 있으며, 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 혈소판 당단백질 결핍을 유발하고 여러 선택적 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체가 확인되었다.
