CD34가 암호화하는 단백질은 줄기세포가 골수의 세포외기질(extracellular matrix)이나 기질세포(stromal cell)에 부착하는 과정에 관여할 가능성이 있다. 단일 통과 막단백질(single-pass membrane protein)로서 고도로 당화되어 있으며, 단백질 인산화효소 C(protein kinase C)에 의해 인산화된다. 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 두 가지 전사체 변이가 확인되었다.
