이 유전자는 두 개의 세포 외 면역글로불린(immunoglobulin) 도메인, 막관통 도메인, 그리고 세포질 도메인을 포함하는 제1형 막 당단백질(glycoprotein)을 암호화한다. 이 유전자는 B세포, T세포의 일부, 흉선세포, 내피세포, 뉴런을 포함한 다양한 세포 유형에서 발현된다. 암호화된 단백질은 면역 억제와 종양(tumor) 억제 활성 조절에 중요한 역할을 한다. 대체 스플라이싱은 다른 아이소폼을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이를 생성한다.
