CD163는 스캐빈저 수용체 시스테인 풍부(scavenger receptor cysteine-rich, SRCR) 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)에 속하는 단백질을 암호화하며, 단핵구(monocyte)와 대식세포(macrophage)에서만 발현된다. 이 단백질은 급성기 조절 수용체(receptor)로서 대식세포에 의한 헤모글로빈/합토글로빈 복합체의 제거와 세포내이입(endocytosis)에 관여하여 유리 헤모글로빈 매개 산화 손상으로부터 조직을 보호할 수 있으며, 세균에 대한 선천면역 감지자이자 국소 염증 유도자로도 기능할 수 있다. 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 선택적 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체들이 보고되어 있다.
