CD16이 암호화하는 단백질은 감마 면역글로불린(IgG)의 Fc 영역에 대한 저친화성 수용체(low affinity receptor)로, 단위체(monomer)로 작용하며 단위체성 또는 응집된 IgG에 결합한다. 이를 통해 말초 순환에서 면역복합체(immune complex)를 포획하는 기능을 할 수 있다. 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이가 확인되었으며, 관련 단백질을 암호화하는 매우 유사한 유전자가 1번 염색체에도 존재한다.
