이 유전자는 정자 생성, 배아 착상, 신경망 형성 및 종양 진행에 중요한 역할을 하는 세포막 단백질인 베이진(basigin)을 암호화한다. 베이진은 면역글로불린(immunoglobulin) 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)에 속하며 다양한 조직에 보편적으로 발현된다. 이 유전자에는 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 전사 변이체(transcript variant)가 발견되었다.
