이 단백질은 당단백질(glycoprotein) 계열의 막 단백질 구성원이다. 이 당단백질은 셀렉틴(selectin)에 탄수화물 리간드(carbohydrate ligand)를 제공한다. 종양(tumor) 세포의 전이(metastasis)에 역할을 할 수 있다. 또한 리소좀(lysosome)의 보호, 유지 및 부착 기능에도 기여할 수 있다. 이 유전자의 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)은 다양한 단백질을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)를 생성한다.
