이 유전자는 단백질 호모다이머화 활성과 TGF-베타 결합 활성을 가능하게 한다. 혈관계 발달, 세포 분화의 양성 조절, 유전자 발현 조절 등 여러 과정에 관여한다. 혈관 신생, 심내막 융기 형성에 관여하는 세포 이동, 혈관 신생의 양성 조절 등에서 상위 역할을 수행한다. 내피 미립자에 위치하며, 대동맥-생식선-중신, 뇌, 심혈관계, 태아 부속물, 간 등 여러 구조물에서 발현된다. 뇌의 동정맥 기형과 유전성 출혈성 모세관확장증 연구에 사용된다. 이 유전자의 사람 오쏠로그는 동맥 질환, 유방암, 혈관종, 유전성 출혈성 모세관확장증에 연관되어 있다. 사람 ENG(endoglin) 유전자에 오쏠로그 관계이다.
