CCND1이 암호화하는 단백질은 세포 주기(cell cycle) 전반에 걸쳐 단백질 양이 뚜렷한 주기성을 보이는 고도로 보존된 사이클린(cyclin) 계열에 속하며, CDK 키나아제(CDK kinase)의 조절자로 기능한다. 이 사이클린은 CDK4 또는 CDK6와 복합체를 이루어 조절 소단위(regulatory subunit)로 작용하고, 그 활성은 세포 주기의 G1/S 전이에 필요하며, 종양 억제 단백질 Rb와 상호작용하는 한편 이 유전자의 발현은 Rb에 의해 양성적으로 조절된다. 세포 주기 진행을 변화시키는 이 유전자의 돌연변이, 증폭 및 과발현은 다양한 인간 암에서 빈번히 관찰된다.
