CCL8 유전자는 염색체 17번의 q 팔에 모여 있는 여러 케모카인(chemokine) 유전자 중 하나이다. 케모카인은 면역 조절 및 염증 과정에 관여하는 분비 단백질의 대과족군을 형성한다. 이 케모카인은 두 개의 인접한 시스테인 잔기를 특징으로 하는 CC 서브패밀리(subfamily)에 속한다. 이 사이토카인(cytokine)은 단핵구, 림프구, 호염기구, 호산구에 대한 화학주성 활성을 나타내며, 종양 관련 백혈구 침윤 및 HIV 감염에 대한 항바이러스 상태에 기여할 수 있다.
