CAV1이 암호화하는 스캐폴딩 단백질(scaffolding protein)은 대부분의 세포 유형에 존재하는 카베올라(caveolae) 원형질막의 주요 구성 요소로, 인테그린(integrin) 소단위를 티로신 키나아제(tyrosine kinase) FYN에 연결해 Ras-ERK 경로와의 결합과 세포 주기(cell cycle) 진행을 촉진하며 종양 억제 유전자 후보이자 Ras-p42/44 미토겐 활성화 키나아제(mitogen-activated kinase) 연쇄반응의 음성 조절자로 작용한다. Caveolin 1과 caveolin 2는 7번 염색체에서 서로 인접해 위치하며 공위치하는 단백질을 발현해 안정한 이종 올리고머 복합체(hetero-oligomeric complex)를 형성한다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 베라르디넬리-세이프 선천성 지방이영양증(Berardinelli-Seip congenital lipodystrophy)과 연관되며, 선택적 스플라이싱 전사체는 caveolin 1의 알파 및 베타 아이소폼을 암호화한다.
